Here it comes! I am actually quite excited because I will be cooking this time a bit more. First was full of rice and that wasn’t as good. Last year was pasta, which was a lot better. This time, the food seems healthier – I am skipping biscuits and chocolate from past 2 years – and I save with not having tea – which was about 70p! Seeing the portions though, it just might be a bit hungrier as well.
There is no good time to live below the line. For anyone. I have the privilege to choose when it happens for me. The official challenge time was during the visit of my family – I could not have refused my grandma’s cake and granddad’s fish. They would be devastated. So I said mid-May which is the time of the Holmfirth Film Festival. So I am going because I want to learn about Luddites and see Wings of Desire which I did not get 10 years ago. I will not have a cuppa or an ice cream which I would normally get, so that will save me something too. And it will make me think even more about how this is really a project for a limited period of time. I can do it others have to live it!
So let’s go for it and try and spread the word and raise some funds for a good cause!
£5 shopping for 5 days
|1 kg potatoes
|1 kg porridge oats
|1 can of pineapple in syrup
|1 can of spaghetti bolognese
|1 can of baked beans
I am allowing myself a bit of oil and a bit of salt and spices, just pinches really, not much, I will be reasonable.
So, I’m thinking of having porridge and pineapple for breakfast, which is not actually that bad. Porridge will be done with water, which is not as good as milk, but hey ho.
150g oats and 1/5 of can each day. That will leave me with 250 g oats for cooking.
Might use a few drops of the syrup to flavour the water I’m drinking.
I’m all day at work, meeting a friend and going to the cinema in the evening to see a film about Luddites – old ones and modern ones.
So I need 2 meals for the whole day, basically one big meal which I will have to abandon after half, which will be tough, because I am a finisher.
Hotpot of 200g of potatoes, 100g of chickpeas, 1/3 can of beans, an egg, 50g of oats and ½ a carrot.
I’m volunteering all day again, but will have time to cook in the evening a bit, so can do something quick. It’s a bit tricky for me as I have to plan with the cooking and get the food ready a day ahead, normally I would have salad for lunch or leftovers. There will be no leftovers and I cannot afford salad. In the evening is another cinema night – Wings of Desire!
Lunch will be a bit of onion fried up with 1/3 of beans, an egg, 1/3 spag bol, 50g oats, 150g potatoes
Dinner will be 200g of spaghetti italianna – just boiled with a drop of oil and a pinch of spice and 100g of chickpeas. Which spice I will decide later.
Day off. I am planning to work on political awareness project to keep myself busy all day. And I will be catching up with my Mum tonight!
½ carrot – feeled in ribbons, a bit of onion, 1/3 can of beans – warmed up, 200 g potatoes – roasted, 100g chickpeas added to beans
Spaghetti 200g grams with a bit of onion and an egg this time
Thursday and Friday are 2 days at work all day
To make the rest of the food work the best I will cook it all together. It will be easier to divide into tubs and just carry what I am allowed to eat with me and then get excited when I come home to another full tab!
